Its often a debatable subject on social media whether to fit a set of 18 inch or 20 inch alloys.
Lets consider each
20 Inch will fill the arches and look good. Until recently we refused to even offer 20 inch alloys to our customers. This was not a popular decision so we eventually and reluctantly caved in.
They invalidate your drivetrain warranty with some manufacturers such as Ford and we are in no way responsible for this. You are accepting this if we fit them as its your choice.
Negative issues of a 20 inch alloy wheels
- Less MPG say 3-4 MPG
- More prone to punctures
- Far far less resilient to potholes and cracking or splitting and rapid deflation
Even if load rated. The UK roads are in poor condition.
A 16 inch or 18 inch may well survive a deep pothole at 60 MPG
A 20 inch will crack. - More prone to aqua planing
- More expensive to replace and less choice
- Reduced handling due to more undamped weight
A 20 inch is roughly 5 KG heavier than an 18 inch - If any of us wear high heels the six inch stiletto looks fab but doesn't work very well on stony muddy roads or potholes.
This is the same with alloy wheels. They are not indestructible and can break
Advice
- Buy a 20 inch spare wheel and the and keep it in the van or in the garage
- Carry a tyre inflator kit and sealant
- Carry 4 standard bolts or how else will your spare wheel under the van fit?
- Take out tyre and alloy insurance its quite cheap
- Most of all Slow Down !
Damage is always caused by hitting things like bumps and potholes hard at speed.
Every customer sings the praises of 20 inch alloys until something goes wrong. They then try to blame the person who sold them the wheels or the manufacturer.
