We sometimes get asked for painted brake calipers on our vans and we aren't overly keen on providing this product.
The Expectation
A decent set of big brakes in a custom colour such as made by Forge will cost around £2000 to £3000 fitted. The paint is baked on at the factory in small batches and is guaranteed for a year. The calipers are specially treated to vent heat and to ensure a paint finish that can last up to a year.
Forge Calipers are often supplied with ceramic brake pads. Due to the cost some people want a "poor mans upgrade" by painting the calipers to look like upgraded brakes.
The reality
If you ask us to paint your brake cailpers we will more than likely refuse unless you really insist. We all know how this ends. The customer will drive the vehicle very hard and the paint simply flakes off within days. This is made worse as every customer that asks for calipers to be painted seems to own the most powerful Karcher pressure washer in the world and this further strips the flaking paint. Trying restore the callipers and their uneven cast surface to gleaming calipers such as seen on performance vehicles.
Typically this costs £200 not the £2000 of Forge brakes for example for simply painting your calipers.
A set of painted brake calipers are likely to start flaking after roughly 500 miles. We recommend painting at least every 3,000 miles. We do not guarantee the paint not to flake off brake calipers. In fact we are saying it will. We recommend Forge Calipers ready done.
